Top 5: Funny Football Movie Moments

Little Giants
Football is a weird sport. It's basically legalized brutality with a lemo shaped ball involved. But like any American past-time Football has its fair share of fun movies and funny moments. So let's do something on the lighter side and focus on the five of the funniest moments on the gridiron.

#5 Personal Foul...on the Whole Team The Replacements

The Replacements
The Replacement is a disposable and agreeable comedy about has been or never was players filling in during a strike (which holy hell the politics of this are effed in retrospect). But the film does offer some funny football moments including the first play after Shane Falco's return.

Determined to make a statement after getting pushed around, Falco tells the whole team to say eff it. The end result is a play where every Sentinels player tries to take out an opposing player as brutally as possible which means everyone is getting penalized. So much so that the ref loses track.

#4 Call A Fair Game Now? from The Longest Yard

The Longest Yard
This scene was making the rounds after the horrible non-call during the Rams and Saints conference final. In it Adam Sandler Paul Crew and his team are getting one terrible call after another. So Crew takes matters into his own hands and fires a laser beam right at the refs junk.

It's childish and stupid, but dammit I love it.

#3 All of the Gimmicks from Little Giants

Little Giants
This underdog movies is a childhood favorite that features a bad-ass female football player and a team of misfits taking on a Pee Wee Football dynasty. After a sound mashing in the first half, Rick Moranis and the kids conjure up every trick they can including foaming at the mouth and a trick play called "The Annexation of Puerto Rico." It's a hilarious romp and celebration of ingenuity and heart over pure physical talent.

#2 Football Game from M*A*S*H*

M*A*S*H*
This entire game is a clusterf***, but a very funny clusterf***. In it two hospital units are going to head to head with plenty of money on the line. But out heroes in the 4077th have a ton of tricks up their sleeve. They insult the opposing players mothers. They bring in a ringer in the second half. They even inject their opponents star player to make him pass out. It's pure chaos where no one, even our heroes looks good.

#1 The Entire Game from The Freshman

The Freshman
This entire film is a masterclass in physical comedy from underrated silent star Harold Lloyd. First and foremost Lloyd isn't even supposed to be in the game, but really wants to get in to impress his classmates. And when the opposing team takes out too many players he gets his chance...and immediately fumbles it. The insanity goes on for the film's final furious minutes with so many emotional redirects and fumbles (literal and figurative) it's hard to keep track. But it sure is funny.
