The more I think about it, the more I wonder why it took so long to put The Rock and Jason Statham together. They're the best modern action heroes we've got with similar but different fighting styles/energies with a knack for banter and one-liners. Thankfully their successful team-ups in The Fast and Furious franchise gave us a chance.
The Skinny
Idris Elba is a technologically enhanced bad guy, probably trying to make humans evolve or something and its up to the action odd couple of Hobbs and Shaw to take him down. Do you need anything else? No? Good!
What Stands Out
An Exceedingly Self-Aware Tone
They're not even pretending to be in reality are they? Idris Elba is a bulletproof superman because science who introduces himself as "bad guy", and the Rock talks about all the times he's saved the world. I am...not opposed.
This Looks Like The Best 80s Buddy Comedy Ever
I have been dying for a legitimate over the top action comedy and it looks like I might have one. The set pieces are absurd. It looks like the banter will be nonstop. Johnson and Statham look to maintain their mutual animosity. We've also got gigantic vehicles, tons of fight scenes, and loads of bullets. I'm in.
The Action Looks Amazing
This is the real reason and I'm here, and it looks like it'll be nonstop. And with director David Leitch of John Wick, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 in the driver's seat everything looks slick, amazingly choreographed, and gleefully over the top.
Hype Level: The Transporter plus The Rock = 10/10 Hype Level
I don't care if I need to get super drunk to truly enjoy it, Imma have fun with this one.
