I'm really wondering if Justice League will be a finished movie by the time its release date comes about. The reshoots have been extensive, Joss Whedon came to fill in for Zack Snyder and apparently rewrote some stuff, and most notably, the movie hasn't released distinctively different footage for months. And this trailer...isn't much different.
What Stands Out
The Song
As much as I love a good use of this song and David Bowie, this track selection feels like a rejection of the previous trailers tone. Before we were going for, "hey it's DC having fun!" and now we're aiming for inspirational intensity? That doesn't really match what I'm seeing on screen which is a flurry of little jokes and a CGI apocalypse.
Engaged?
Have I tried to block out Batman v Superman so much that I forgot an engagement between Lois and Clark? Regardless, I'm failing to see how this moment at the trailer's open has any affect on anything unless Superman is coming back, even though the movie is acting like that's not happening. This just doesn't work.
What Does The Villain Look Like?
I think we get a glimpse or two of Diana fighting our big bad and his giant army of bug like soldiers, basically The Avengers chitauri but with wings. I think he also attacks some Amazons but who the hell knows, it's almost impossible to decipher some of these shots.
The Color Palette
This is the other giant problem the DC Cinematic Universe has, Zack Snyder's obession with hi-contrast darkness. The colors for Justice League and their costumes are bright and different with Batman being a notable dark stand-out. Now even Wonder Woman and Flash's costumes look muted and eaten up by a sea of orange.
Any New Footage?
There's not a lot of new footage here. Most of this is extensions or expansions of scenes we already saw before, with the lone exception of a fun Batmobile sequence. There's some new dialogue exchanges but I have yet to spot a new location.
Verdict: Not So Hopeful
*Sigh* My hope for this film continues to go down with every new glimpse. To truly shock me this movie would need to learn from Batman v Superman's mistakes and that doesn't appear to be the case. It looks like a bunch of cool moments completely removed from the narrative.
